How did you discover plagiocephaly and Serkel helmets?
“We realised at four months and headed to the GP, then were sent the physical therapist, everyone told me not to worry and it would fix itself but wish we had been referred to Nova Orthotics for an assessment earlier.”
“The re-positioning therapy was a lot of effort, waking up and moving him every night throughout the night, positioning toys, tipping the bassinette, it did help but the flat spot remained.”
Tell us about your experience with Serkel helmet therapy
“Lauren at Nova Orthotics (Newcastle, NSW) is awesome, it’s been a really good experience.”
“When thinking about a helmet to begin with I worried a little bit, but focussed on Rafi during puberty, he’s going to be self-conscious anyway and I didn’t want him to hate me for not fixing his head when I could do it as a baby now.”
“In the first few weeks we could tell a change when we looked at him, but then it was difficult to really see, you start doubting yourself. My husband said, he could definitely see a change. Having the appointment and seeing the number difference was really impressive to go from severe to mild in 4 weeks on the CVAI scale.”
If you could offer any advice to another family recognising a flat spot, what would you say?
“Just get an assessment done, It gives you peace of mind and you just get to know, its concrete information and the scan is really easy.”
“Serkel is a bit more expensive but I would say to others “If you have the money don’t worry about” I joined an American support group, seeing the big bulky helmets I feel really sorry for those baby’s.”
